The Love/Hate Relationship with Valentine's Day

This past week sucked.

  • Response to discussion board for Women's Studies (I am not very fond of this class)
  • Chemistry lab report
  • Chemistry pre-lab report
  • English Blog
  • ARIS chemistry homework
  • Math exam 1
  • Math quiz 3
  • Biology pre-lab quiz
  • First Biology Exam.
All due by/on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. So Basically that leaves Thursday-Saturday free..kind of. But anyways, this blog is about Valentines Day.

So when all of this was happening in my life, my roommate participated in the Secret Valentine program that was conducted by her church. Throughout the week, she spent numerous hours decorating, making cards, buying flowers, and buying gifts to surprise her secret valentine. I have to admit. I love Valentine's Day, but it also really does suck. All that planning, money, and time that is put into this holiday is intense. Almost every single day of the week, she received chocolates, flowers, bears, cards and I thought that was really sweet. Seeing all of this has made me question what I am going to get for valentines day. My boyfriend Albert, who also goes to VT, told me that he has a surprise install for me, but I couldn't wait until Sunday for it to be revealed! I kept nagging him and he kept joking, you are thinking too much, there's no surprise anymore! Finally, I started to hate Valentine's Day because I was frustrated in what I was going to get him!

When Sunday finally rolled around, I woke up and just laid in bed for the longest time. My roommate kept asking me, "Emily, don't you need to go pee." I kept saying "No" because I really did not have to go. As she started to head out to go to church service, I saw a balloon in front of our door. I immediately got really excited and jumped out of bed. When I opened the door, there were post-its everywhere with messages that my boyfriend wrote. I was very excited and my roommate kept laughing at me because the whole week, I was bitter with her getting so much Valentine's gifts and I was just hiding in my room doing homework. She told me that she tried to get me to go to sleep the night before and as I was sleeping, Albert came over to our dorm at like 3:00 am to decorate. After I found the surprise, Albert came over to give me flowers and we spent the whole day eating lunch and seeing a movie together.

I have a very bittersweet feeling about Valentine's Day now. The planning and the hard work and takes up so much time. However, in the end, it is definitely worth it to see the person you spend it with be so surprised!
